Listen: Chelsea Light Moving - Burroughs + Groovy and Linda
Thurston Moore’s new effort, Chelsea Light Moving, is almost picking up where Sonic Youth left (Leaving? I’m still not sure if Sonic Youth is together.) off. The loads of distortion and the noise element of the band is still very evident in Chelsea Light Moving.
Chelsea Light Moving has released two tracks, “Burroughs” and “Groovy and Linda”. “Burroughs” is about William S. Burroughs, the surrealist Beat writer, and his last words. It’s a rip-roaring, thrashing six-minute track with punching guitars and reverberating drums. The track features an intense guitar solo from Moore, which wraps the track up.
“Groovy And Linda”, on the other hand, is a track that drudges along slowly, with clear alternate tunings on guitar from the start, another Sonic Youth trademark. The slip-and-sliding guitars and the repetitive lyrics (“Don’t shoot, we are yr children) are the most prominent features on this track.
Both tracks are something that will make a Sonic Youth fan happy for a while, until the band actually tells us what they’re doing. Moore, his ex-wife and SY bassist Kim Gordon, and Yoko Ono are said to do a collaboration. This will hold you over, if you’re waiting for that. If you’re not waiting for the rapture (if you believe in rapture), listen below, via Slicing Up Eyeballs.
