Listen: Strand Of Oaks - Trap Door

Strand Of Oaks

There isn’t a single artist who I’ve longed for new material from more than Strand Of Oaks. When I caught him live last year it was apparent that although Timothy Showalter had already crafted one of the best albums of the last ten years with Pope Killdragon he was a long way off from showing us what brilliance he is capable of creating.

His follow up album is Dark Shores which comes out Tuesday (7/24), “Trap Door” is the second early release from it. At his show I was really struck by the stark difference in the change from the soul-bearing intimate delivery you hear on his recordings to the raw passionate emotion that erupts when face to face with him. On these new tracks he is beginning to channel that live presence creating this feeling that Timothy Showalter could very well be on a Bon Iver level in the coming months… of course predictions are easy to make so as of now I’ll just keep on digging his music and see what happens from here.

The other release from Dark Shores is “Maureen’s,” displaying that his ability to write incredibly lyric-driven songs hasn’t dimmed in the slightest. He closes with the lines “I’ll find an endless spring where clouds give way to newborn suns, I will find you waiting there bathed in light and out of reach,” he channels his feelings with such eloquence it’s almost painful to partake in.
