Listen: Kendrick Lamar - Swimming Pools (Drank)

I have been a fan of Kendrick Lamar since my friend showed me his Section.80 mixtape from 2011 (though he’s been a member of  a number of other projects for a while now). Everything about that mixtape made you feel good. It made a lot of sense why it got the attention that it did.

Some of his best tracks off the mixtape were “Rigamortus”, “ADHD”, “Blow My High (which, may I say, has the greatest hook that will get stuck in your head, no doubt about it), “No Make-Up”, and “Fuck Your Ethnicity”. Perhaps some of the internet buzz that came with the album had something to do with the extremely well done and fancy as hell video for “Rigamortis” (check out below). Also, the fact that half of his AUDIO tracks on youtube have more than a million views is wild. This guy is huge, and he deserves it. This stuff goes down easy.

Enough with the past, though. Kendrick has just released his new song, “Swimming Pools (Drank)” that seems to step up the dirty, sexy beats and ups the bass a whole lot. The classic Kendrick vocals create an infinite string of smooth rhymes that glide off this guys tongue creating the illusion that this level of craft is effortless for him.

This is one of those songs that if you’re into music like Kendrick’s, you’ll have on repeat. I can’t shut it off. Really diggin’ the way he’s slowed down a bit. The introduction is a bit more serious and dark, similar to the subject matter that he seems to be rhyming about: alcohol abuse.

The ironic thing is that the subject that he is exploring, why people drink when they choose to drink, kind of makes you want to pick up a drink and do whatever to this song… party hard or sip slowly as if pondering life? Whatever it is, when you hear beats and rhymes like this, it is impossible to not feel some kind of serious emotion. Also, this hook? Hell yeah.

Listen to “Swimming Pools” and watch “Rigamortis” below.
