If Chan Marshall isn’t going to treat us drooling pups to a couple more releases from her upcoming album, “Sun” then we’re just going to have to make do with some remixes. And that is just fine, especially if they all sound like this. Nicolas Jaar has worked his musical tech-y genius on a remix of the new single from Cat Power called ”Cherokee” that you can hear below.
The remix sounds like some kind of religious trance. It takes the most precious parts of the song creating a very unique and totally Chan-like (if Chan were to specialize in trance music) experience. The lyrics to this song already ask to be taken as some sacred verse, and the lines that Jaar chooses to highlight work perfectly with the beats he is using.
Seriously, if there were a church dedicated to worshiping musicians as talented and iconic as Cat Power, this haunting hymn-notic remix would be played every Sunday. I would attend a church like that. Also, that echo on Chan’s line, “Bury me, marry me to the sky/marry, marry me to the sky”? Wow. Chills.
