Video: Joey Bada$$ - Waves

Rising 17 year-old Hip-Hopper Joey Bada$$ is rising for a very good reason. He’s showing a talent and creativity in young rappers that’s really only matched by Earl Sweatshirt at the moment, and his debut mixtape 1999 shows this off perfectly.

Need proof? You can either watch the new video for “Waves” below, or go listen to “Survival Tactics”, one of the best tracks of the year to date.

Brooklyn’s seventeen year-old MC Joey Bada$$ is exactly what hip-hop needs right now: a throwback to the good old days where guys like Nas and Mobb Deep sat atop hip-hop hierarchy.

For the past two years, the Odd Future collective seem to have been considered the best young rappers, but their gimmick seems to be getting, well… gimmicky. With his newly released debut mixtape, 1999Joey Bada$$ seems to be taking the title of greatest young MC for the time being.

“Survival Tactics” is the mixtape’s highlight: a fast paced, no nonsense track that exemplifies what has been missing in our days of cloud rap and overproduced, frilly beats. Don’t get me wrong - I love guys like Danny Brown and Kendrick Lamar - I just think it’s refreshing to finally get someone in the game whose main focus is his rapping and storytelling. Even beyond that, this kid’s flow is impeccable, as he raps with the confidence and maturity of someone who’s been in the game for years.
