Penguin Prison, the moniker of Chris Glover, has been an under-the-radar favorite of mine for the past few years, first with “The Worse It Gets”, then with “Don’t Fuck With My Money”, and more recently with his feature on RAC’s “Hollywood”, all of which epitomize the best of infectious synth-pop.
After Walk The Moon’s fun set, it only made sense to head over to catch Glover and his band as they played all three of my favorites, along with his own version of Lana Del Rey’s “Blue Jeans”, which he remixed somewhat recently. The electro-pop set was filled with synths, synths, and more synths - all providing the most melodic electronica I’ve heard in a while.
While Glover’s live showmanship wasn’t anything special, he managed to make his songs sound pretty similar to their studio recording, which surprised me: on record, his voice is flawless and seems like it could have been assisted by recording equipment - but this was not the case as his voice maintained that same, unique quality, and remained flawless as ever.
Most of the excitement around the track was that it’s an awesome song with a killer chorus, and also that it had Penguin Prison on the track too! For the video, they’ve naturally gone the “cowboy in L.A.” look, because of the juxtaposition of old Wild West dude meets new-fangled 21st century life and architecture.
Or something like that. He totally pees on a wall and makes his horse watch him, by the way. Them cowboys were pervs.
Listen to RAC’s new song “Hollywood” featuring Penguin Prison below.
Up until now RAC (Andre Allen Anjos)has solely been doing remixes of and for other artists, reworking some of the best new tunes of the last couple of years into huge anthemic electronic wonders, but today he dropped his first ever original track with Penguin Prison (Chris Glover) on vocal duties.
“Hollywood” premiered over at Green label Sound this morning and below you can give its care-free, upbeat and bright Summer vibe a spin (and grab the MP3 whilst you’re at it).
